Red EP – Toothless Review
Reviewed By: George Archibald
Shaverstown, Pennsylvania natives Toothless are back with their newest release, the Red Ep out on March 30th. The band takes a blend of hard rock, southern rock, hardcore, and metal and puts their own spin on the metalcore sound. Heavy guitars, driving rhythms and a relentless intensity can be found on every song. Toothless can be compared to the likes of The Chariot, Norma Jean and Everytime I Die with their song structure and sound.
The Red Ep opens with the title track ‘Mask’. Mirroring their self-titled EP, Mask starts off with this feeling of taking its listener on a journey. The beat kicks off with a dissonant guitar riff before leading you down to the opening vocals of the album. A quick paced bouncing guitar riff picks up the pace as vocalist Travis Antoniello rips through the song.
The single ‘Bridges’ continues with the angst, sounding like early Norma Jean. This track rips along feeding you heavy riff after riff, then cuts back to let the bass ring through the mix before breaking down to a single guitar. The song tends to churn before ending which is very pit inducing. I’m a little shocked the band didn’t push the envelope coming back in before ending the song. Instead of lingering though, Toothless comes back in with Torches pushing the pace of the album even faster. Torches blares out almost like the punk songs of the past, rolling through with speed and intensity.
Toothless makes a great stand with the Red Ep, furthering their chops on their second EP. If you are looking for a quick hit of in your face abrasive metalcore, pick up this EP. At six songs this EP packs quite the punch. You can check out the Red Ep when it comes out on March 30th.
